“The Lord bless you and keep you; the Lord make his face to shine upon you, and be gracious to you; the Lord lift up his countenance upon you, and give you peace”. (Numbers 6: 24-26).
I pray that you are all well. In this unchartered time what we do know is that we are a resurrected people. Out of the ashes of death we will rise.
In this time there is a weird juxtaposition of many being incredibly overworked and overburdened, while others are bored, lost, not sure what to do with themselves. Our human souls must be fed with a sense of self-satisfaction and it can be hard in this time when many can’t work and do what we are trained to do. We can, though, be fed by a sense of gratitude and joy that is NOT rooted in things of the world, but grounded in the idea that we are held by God and loved unconditionally by God. Miles Davis, a famous jazz trumpeter, said, “I am not what I do. I do what I am.” In this Covid time, and always, we should take this to heart. We are more than what we do. Our souls and personhood are not defined by what we do.
This Covid-19 time has enabled many of us to slow down, evaluate, be less hurried. It is a time for our DOING to be examined, over and against who we are. Our Lord gives us the resources to know who we are in his care. May we care for and help others out of who we are.
We fear the unknown, the sickness and pain, the changes and confusion. But our Lord releases us from this. He removes the barriers that keep us from knowing him and his peace. He provides paths for always doing what we are.
With love and gratitude, Rev. Priscilla
